Petroleum Industry: Technological Excellence and Social Responsibility in Serving Society.
For the first time in the business world, the 17th World Petroleum Congress debated the issue of corporate social responsibility in the oil industry at the dawn of a new century. This Congress theme, "Petroleum Industry: Excellence and Responsibility in Serving Society" set the tone for the Event's programme agenda. "Companies in our business have to consider the interests of all stakeholders. We have to worry about the impact of our activities on all of those around us and, in particular, on the communities in which we operate," stated Francisco Gros, President of Petrobras and of the WPC National Brazilian Committee.

Petroleum for Global Development: Networking People, Business and Technology to Create Value.
Canada's first-ever opportunity to host the prestigious gathering of the world's oil and gas industry leaders attracted participants from a record-high number of 97 countries. The tally shows a total of 4,642 people attended the Congress, among them 3,078 delegates, 439 accompanying persons, 625 exhibitors and 421 media. Some 900 Calgary volunteers were also involved.
